Most hockey skates look like ice skates. They are usually laced skates and have 4 wheels. The boot is usually either leather or ballistic nylon or a combination of both. Heights of hockey skate boots may vary. These skates do not have a brake system (unless asphalt counts).

In addition to specialized skates, hockey skaters need good pads and protective gear. Sticks, street pucks, and goal nets are also part of the equipment. As with the Phoenix Coyotes, a rowdy, obnoxious crowd of onlookers enhances the hockey experience.
